  • Frequency at Which a Radiator Should Be Flushed

Simple vehicle maintenance procedure like radiator flush could add several years to vehicle’s lifespan enabling you to enjoy its maximum use. A radiator is part of a vehicle’s cooling system installed to ensure that the vehicle operates at the right temperature. A radiator is a heat exchanger made of two tanks that are linked by a core consisting of several tubes. When a vehicle is switched, the coolant moves from one tank to another due to rise in its temperature allowing cooler air that takes the heat out of the coolant to be dragged in through the tubes when the vehicle moves.

To avoid overheating of the engine that might result in breakdown or worse, it is recommended that radiator flushing be done. An engine flush gets rid of the dirt that might mount up in the engine thus compromising the purity of distilled water and antifreeze in the engine. Some engine parts may freeze during winter because the mixture’s purity is compromised hence leading to some serious damages that might irreparable. For efficient draining of a radiator, wait until the car has cooled down or done it on a day that the car has not been used.

A clean coolant of standard purity is used to refill the radiator after draining the old one and the radiator properly washed with a flushing agent. Dirt particles in the engine can block its parts or cause corrosion hence the need of a flushing agent to remove them. Draining the coolant mixture can be easily done at home or at a local garage in case you need any help with it.

After putting the plug back, fill the engine with distilled water and flushing agent and the engine on and carefully follow instructions obtained with the flushing agent. To completely get rid of the cleaning mixture, open valves on the cylinder and drain the engine once again. If your fresh antifreeze need dilution, use distilled water while following manufacturer’s instruction before filling it in the clean engine. Excess air if not gotten rid of might result in minor overheating that might have serious damages to the engine.

You can start the engine to ensure the temperatures are normal after adding the coolant then turning it off to get rid of more trapped air in the system. How often a radiator should be flushed depends on the vehicle and probably the weather you tend to drive in. A once in every five years flushing is a healthy habit for your vehicle but it should not be limited to that because sometime early flushing might be needed like due to the presence of rust around the engine area. Therefore, the standard time a radiator should be flushed is once every few years but it is majorly the info. here. Find time to read more here about how you can maintain your car.
